Hate to dissapoint, Turpin, but that's a fashion design.
One sure way you can usually tell is to check and see if the warp is the same as the weft (horizonatl and vertical the same). In traditional Scottish tartans, they will be. In a lot of fashion fabrics used in the clothing industry, the patterns will be different, as they are here.
