Yes. The difference between Symmetrical, and asymmetrical is this (as I understand it)...

In a symmetrical tartan, the pattern of the warp is mirrored from the beginning to the end of the sett.

    I.E. bk2 w4 r12 b2 r12 w4 bk2.

In an asymmetrical tartan, the sett is not mirrored.

    I.E. bk2 w4 r12 b2, at which point it repeats the sett bk2 w4 r12 b2, and so on, instead of mirroring.

    Did I get that right?

In any case, the weft will be exactly the same as the warp, no matter what the warp does.

does that hold true for asymetrical tartans as well? *so confused*
Yes - if the warp has 2BK 6R 2Y repeated over and over (i.e., no pivot point, completely asymmetric), the weaver would weave 2 Bk, 6R, 2Y over and over again in the weft for the complete tartan. In other words, if you pick up a swatch of tartan that doesn't have a selvedge edge, you shouldn't theoretically be able to tell which is the warp direction and which is the weft direction. They should look identical. In reality, every tartan I've ever measured is actually a bit longer measured parallel to the warp than to the weft (i.e., the blocks are not quite square), although they should be. But that doesn't change the fact that a tartan should have the same sequence and size of stripes in the warp as in the weft.

    http://www.camillavalleyfarm.com/kni...eavingyarn.htm

I've found this website to get some yarn for weaving tartan, does anyone else have any others? A friend of mine is teaching me to weave, and we're gonna' look into weaving some tartan once I learn.

    Thanks in advance.
