I already have a photographer online but I was just looking for ideas.

I'd suggest picking up a Black Argyll vest. You can wear it with a White dress shirt and black tie and it will transform the whole outfit for a "reasonable" cost. Also... it's the best way I know to look dressy without wearing a jacket.

Or you can go with a "dressy-casual" look by removing the tie and rolling the cuffs a bit.

Think your kilted-senior pix is a wonderful idea... lots of class.

I don't have any links handy, but I recall seeing a post somewhere (in a kilt-related forum) about professional uniform companies having suitable or easily adaptable jackets available, at reasonable prices.
A little "googling" might be in order.

    P.S.

Even though you're doing this for your mother now, you'll appreciate it later.

Mom probably knows best, and making Mom happy is always a good thing.

You only get one Mom, so keep her happy.

The waistcoat (vest) idea is probably the best, if your on a tight budget. Check the local thrift shops, they're fairly easy to find. Look for one that DOESN'T have a satin/taffeta back with a strap.

Try a more casual look, too. A polo shirt, or perhaps a nice sweater (sweater+kilt is a good combination.) A lot of people don't go full-out formal for their senior picture, but the picture can still be excellent.

One guy I knew (not from my school) handed in a picture of himself in a full and correct reproduction suit of late 15th century Italian armour, on one knee, helmet under one arm and sword in the other. The next year the school implemented a strict shirt-and-tie policy. So get your kilted pic while you can!
