    4.5 inches is an awful lot to take up in a hem. You may find that the fell (where the stitching of the pleats end) will be much too low.

    I agree. If you need to take that much off then I'd suggest having it taken apart, cut down from the top and then rebuilt.

    But it sems only military kilts are found in this length, were they not worn even higher? Experts please chime in now...

    I appreciate your input about that. The fell is about 6 inches above where the hem will be.

    The fell is generally 1/3rd the length of the kilt or about 8" in a traditional kilt. The bottom of the fell should land mid rump (hopefully the largest part of one's backside). Are you sure that the fell is 15"? I'm not sure that even military kilts are worn at the nipple line.

    You're right. I eyeballed the length in my previous post. The bottom of the fell is at 8inches. That leaves 13.5 inches to the hem line.

    I don't think I saw any thing said about where you are wearing this kilt. If it is a military kilt the top should be just under the rib cage. If you wear it where you normally wear you jeans this could account for the extra length.
