It's the crew neck...I've always preferred crew necks myself.
Used to be able to count on being able to go into Marshall Field's here in Chicago for the after Christmas sale and pick up really nice Shetland wool crew neck sweaters for cheap...now: no more Field's, no more sweaters. I once heard that you lock in your style of dress when you're in your last year of high school/first year of college...sounds like me.
Anyway, this is tough...I'm now waiting for the temperature to drop so I can trot out my new sweater!

Here's another source from down the road and less than $CDN30. Forest City Surplus.

Way I look at it, $40 for a wool version of the sweater seems worth it...$10 difference between wool and acrylic. I looked at a couple of sweaters at the Army Surplus shop a couple of weeks ago...hard to find one large enough and I'm only a 42 chest "large". Also only available in OD or Air Force Blue and in the $20-$25 range for a used-but-in-pretty-good-shape garment. Sort of a cost/benefit analysis kind of thing.
Walkerk mentions a Bridgedale version...I actually have a khaki colored heavy sweater made by Jaeger (apparently a UK company) that my dad actually wore when he flew in the Second World War...still in very good shape even though I wore it through college. Some things were made to last.
