There's a t-shirt I'm rather fond of... it has an illustration of a piper, and around him is written "Genetically pre-disposed to the sound of the pipes." I think there may be some truth in that, though it can be argued whether it's nature or nurture -- most of us with Scots heritage were raised hearing the pipes, at least occasionally. I, for instance, had an alblum by the "Pipes and Drums of Her Majesty's Black Watch" or something like that, as a kid, and listened to it near endlessly.

I LOVE the sound of the pipes. I take a particular pleasure in the knowledge that their sound curdles the blood of many.

I really love solo bagpipes, and pipes accompanying other instruments or singers, but massed pipe bands . . . not so much.

    Best regards,

I like massed pipe bands when there's more then 8 bands (i.e. Loch Norman Games always has an incredible massed bands.) For those standing out of the center of 300+ pipers, it is loud. When you stand where I normally stand which is of course in the center and surrounded on all sides by pipers, it is enveloping.
The sound of the drones almost holds you in a sense.
