you have to get a permit to hike to the crater. they limit the number these by only selling a handfull the day of the hike. First come first served unless they have changed the procedure. This is to limit the impact on the ecosystem. I have not done it but I have friends who have. It is like hike in sand (lots of ash still), one step up and slide down , repeat till at the top. Not my kind of fun.
