To answer the question about hunting tartans, yes it is a bit unusual to have a "hunting" version of the Fitzsimmons. All a hunting tartan is, in essense, is a tartan based in greens (usually), blues or browns. In other words, more earth-toned than the red based tartans.

Question: I've never particularly regarded blues as being among the earth tones. More so than bright red, sure, but less so than brick reds and umbers. But that could be just me. Anyway, my point is, would it be unusual for a blue-dominant tartan to have a green-dominant "hunting" version, or would that just be MacDoe Blue and MacDoe Green?

And MacSimoin, I love your Bréifne tartan. Great use of the colors.

Well, when I say that most hunting tartans are green and blue based, this usually referrs to green and blue used together in the same tartan. For example, Hunting Grant, Hunting Robertson, Hunting MacLeod, etc. However, there are some that are mostly all green, such as Hunting Ross (that utilizes two shades of green), and then some rare ones that are mostly all blue, such as Hunting Maclaine.

Some are mostly brown. Hunting Fraser would be an example.

The point being that in each case the tartan is an alternative to a much brigher (usually red) tartan.

Sometimes things get tricky. For instance, the Scott tartan is primarily red. There is a green variation of the tartan, and a brown variation of the tartan. If I say "Scott Hunting," which tartan do I mean? It depends upon who you ask. I'd say the most common practice today is to call the brown tartan "Scott Hunting" and the green one simply "Scott Green." But in some instanced the green tartan is called the Scott Hunting, and justifiably so. I usually avoid the issue and call them Scott Green and Scott Brown respectively so there is no confusion as to which tartan I mean.

from South Carolina, Brad. I think those photos were hosted on a site that's no longer there, or have been moved. that's the usual cause if a picture doesn't show up in an old posting.
