Mind if I ask what the argument was about?

Hopefully you'll have loads of fun being kilted here.
The Aussie, after hearing my American accent, said, "Hey, you're not Scottish! You shouldn't be wearing the kilt!" to which I replied, "Hey, you're an Aussie, you shouldn't be wearing those jeans!"

    Hehehehe!! That's an excellent comeback!

And, as an Aussie, I'm ashamed and embarrassed by the behaviour of a fellow Australian... although, in all honesty, we have our fair share of uneducated, loud-mouthed, ignorant, unwashed masses in this country.

All I can say is: please don't judge all Aussies by that one example - some of us are decent people.

    cheers

Such folk exist everywhere, there is no ethnic or national monopoly on rude and/or ignorant. I suggest that you walk tall, head up, shoulders back, and carry on. People react to the way you project yourself into the world around you. If you are confident, aware, and calm, few folk will trouble you. And you are near guaranteed to not be a "victim", as real predators prefer prey that is unaware. I do not know how that applies to kilt lifters, but human nature is mostly the same the world over. The infuence of large amounts of drink are fairly predictable too, irrespective of location.

Just keep on going out. I have found that the negative comments are vastly overshadowed by the positive, especially the positive comments from appreciative ladies.

Of course, since you've got a girlfriend, you probably shouldn't act like you like those TOO much.

As an 'transplant' Aussie (In the U.S. since '77) I've learned to be wary of SOME Aussie travellers. A few seem to transform into abrasive loudmouth morons as soon as they step off the plane!. I usually avoid them in the pub, and keep my mouth shut, so they can't recognise my accent, until I see if they are O.K. or of the 'Yobbo' sort. They would never act so rudely at home or they'd be swiftly ejected from the establishment. Most are the usual laid-back easy going pleasant folk that most have come to expect. But just a few??? not nice at all.

Of course, that NEVER happens with us Yanks...that's why the whole world just loves us.

Seems like a whole lot of people behave badly when they're going on a vacation where the object is to eat, drink and party. The other end of the spectrum are the ones who act like overly-entitled spoiled children and I've been embarrassed to see a few of my countrymen act that way when overseas....it's particularly annoying to have to watch them make a scene in a hotel over some small amenity that they think that they're being deprived of. Where ever you go...be a good guest.

    Best
