Possible kilt pins

I think you are referring to the old, (now retired) U.N. Peace Keeping Force blue beanie badge. They have since changed it to the below, which is still attached to my last beanie.

James, that is a fine collection of insignia you have there. As for their suitability as kilt pins - well, I am not entirely convinced (sorry!). For me, the pin should have some relevance to the kilt to which it is attached unless, that is, it is of a purely ornamental design - but, I am sure you would be able to match some of those with a kilt (I could not!).

Also, I believe you should avoid widespread, or horizontal, designs, such as the wings, as these are so much more likely to become caught on furniture, shrubs and other obstacles we encounter in daily life. In this connection, I find that I even catch my X Marks pins from time to time, and have to be aware of this when wearing them. Vertical pins do tend to be less problematic in my view.

Having said that I, like you, am invariably on the lookout for items that might convert into unusual kilt pins as I am sick to the back teeth with tacky, moulded sword pins, especially those with clan emblems! The few sword pins I have, with one exception, are of sterling silver and were not mass-produced.

Hamish - Thanks for your insight! I haven't tried any of the horizontal pins as yet, but I take your meaning! One poster (Mr. MacDougal) has tried them and reported good results. Being sort of "kilt pin challenged" I have been switching out the ones I like from kilt to kilt. After your remarks about material damage, I thought to match a pin to a plaid and not move it.

Some of the USMC relevent pins will find homes on the Leatherneck tartans. Others may be matched to whim.

I am wearing the Leatherneck today, and will try the gold (USMC) wings, and save the HALO wings for another time. The HALO wings have more sharp edges anyway.

I bought the spoon and fork (made of horn) recently, all held together with a strip of leather.

When the need comes I can remove them and with my sgian have my complete cutlery for dinner!

Now I just need the kilt for the pin!

I could see a Klingon insignia making an awesome-looking kilt pin, if its angularity doesn't make it impractical. For those who didn't spend the summer of 1988 reading every Star Trek novel in order, you can see the Klingon insignia on this mug:

Well, Hermann, that certainly is unusual, but what size are the utensils? If they are the same size as salt/mustard spoons, they will be just right for a kilt pin - although maybe a little small - but I cannot imagine having a normal sized spoon/fork attached to any of my kilts!!

Ah, I am with you when you say, "Now I just need the kilt for the pin!" I have several pins I have accumulated in readiness for kilts to put them on - almost enough to bring my Kilt Kollection to 100, in fact!!
