I will never look at the pleating in quite the same way again! Now I wonder why anyone would ever "pleat to random"........? shear laziness?

Hmm... I need to learn how to post photos. I was trying to show a cross-section of the pleats viewed from the inside. Many of the pleats are a half-sett deep and others are a deep full-sett needed to reproduce the tartan pattern. The red Robertson is the first kilt I ever made (which I use for my highland dancing) and the ancient hunting is #37. I don't have a photo of the inside of that one, but it was done the same way.

I hope this works. It's the first time I've tried to send photos. These are Robertson kilts that I made.

In the third one (which shows the back of a Hunting Robertson kilt), all the tartan elements are there (squint your eyes, and blur out the pleat boundaries, and you can see all the elements), but the individual pleats don't pick up the elements symmetrically. A more conventional way to have pleated this kilt would have been to put the red stripe centered in a pleat and to have made the pleats on either side of it precise mirror images of one another (like PaulHenry's kilt above).

I hope you understand that I'm not criticizing - the original post asked about how to pleat the HR, and we've now seen 5 examples. If I were to make a choice, I would go with what was done in PaulHenry's kilt, because matching the tartan and having symmetrical pleats is most traditional.
