Anyway, Montcalm was a Frenchman. Some say here that governor Vaudreuil could have won. But he was a Canadian (old meaning: French Canadian). So Montcalm ran the troops and lost.
Ironically, British Regular Officers such as Braddock viewed American provincial troops (like Washington's Virginia Regiment) in a similar fashion, and during the Revolution, the British Army did not make full use of their loyalist forces either. Conventional wisdom tends to cite this regular/colonial tension as one of the reasons for the American rebellion.
