I won't even order a B&T at the pub, myself, but...
Ireland's military pipers wear black w/ their saffron kilts, so I don't think there's much of an issue w/ your doing so.

Irish Army tunics are dark green. The Royal Irish Regiment's pipers also wear dark green tunics.

Well, as an Irishman I can tell you that I wouldn't care what colour you wore with saffron! Who knows what he meant...
Could be some misinformed reference to Orangemen or the Black & Tans?
I've noticed when kilted in public, some people have a tendency to regale you with their "expertise." I once had a Scotsman ask me if my kilt had 12 yards!
