Keep in mind that muzzle velocities were significantly lower than what we're accustomed to seeing in modern longarms, so the larger caliber round was required for stopping power.

That is doable, not cheap, but doable.
It is MUCH harder to replicate a PARTICULAR illustration than a more "general" idea. However, the completed product is usually VERY cool.
So, where/what group do you work with?
I am hoping to get involved with the Darien Highlanders out of Savannah, Georgia.
