I think the problem is Scotland itself gets very little attention. We see kilts, bagpipes, loch ness, and fun accents, but I struggle to think of a single time I have seen a modern Scottish city on tv or in a movie. For the most part it is overshadowed by england in anything serious. And Ireland gets a bit more attention than scotland for a variety of reasons as well, though I bet if you asked a similar question the response would still be far from encouraging. But it must be better off than wales, which I'm sure a disturbingly large portion of the population wouldn't even recognize as a country.
That and there's the school problem which I could (and often do) rant about for hours, but we don't need to open up that can of worms.
