Upgrade your sporran belt

So, the sporran belt looked a little wimpy to me. So, I went to the local hardware store (some people call it the feed store). I found some 1/4" chain and some nice toggle clips.

So I clipped off the old chain and put on the new chain with the toggle clips.

But most of the rabble who wear the kilt on a daily basis stear clear of chain sporran belts, because the chain will damage the fabric. This isn't just an urban legend!

I upgraded one of my sporran chains in the way ChattanCat has, and I now have no fear at all that the chain will damage any of my kilts: the links are welded together and have no sharp edges at all. I think the heavier chain looks a lot more sturdy and masculine as well.

The original clips were pretty awful, as well, and looked as if they could be pulled apart with very little effort.

The total upgrade cost me about $10 - well worth it, I think.

Further to what James was saying on this the Chain belts do have their place, Burns night, Christmas etc. For everyday wear or a day wear sporran such as the one pictured my personal preference would be to go with a leather sporran belt, leave the chain for special occasions and for use with a dressier sporran.

I use wallet chains with trigger snaps, and substituted 1" split rings (key rings) for the triangle d-rings on the leather parts. I can change chains from dog style (heheh) to the woven wire chain sections I cannibalized from a women's fashion belt for those more formal occasions.

I actually did what someone else here suggested. I went and got a thin womens belt, cut it down a bit, and used that. Simple, cost about $3, and works.
