The Marines I talked to in the I Corp area said that they were taught to jump out head first. They were to replace the divot before leaving the drop zone, if they had time, or to use it as a fox hole if the situation required it.
Even though I was Army there was something reassuring about working in I Corp and knowing it was the Marine area of operation.

Yeah, but then that makes for a bad PLF, especially when you HAVE to like in pre-jump training.
Rigger here...and I hate those army jump boots. Regular issued were just fine; and now I find I wish I would have kept mine.
