Just to add a late choice.

As long as I don't have to buy it by the case, nothing can beat Bruichladdich.

    I like Lagavulin too.

For an "inexpensive" single malt, 10 year old Glenmorangie is a pretty good buy. Also if you like Islays, the McClelland's Islay is not bad (it's actually Bowmore re-branded), half the price of the Lagavulin, and more than half as good.

Edradour. It is the smallest distillery in Scotland. It is located in Pitlocary and is used in the House of Lords personal blend.

Might as well give this thread a bump!

Highland Park 18yr. It is at the top end of my price range, but the complexity of the flavors just blows me away!

I can hardly come up with anything not already mentioned.
However my favorite whisky brand might be William Lawson, and for one reason: Their commercials featuring kilts. And yes, I know, William Lawson is a blended whisky, not single malt.

I guess I should have dug a little deeper to find this earlier post.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

20 year old Glenlivet is great for marinating steaks in. I drink mostly just Speyburn right now. like the undertone of honey. Yum Yum.
