			The Berserk Sporran Project

After recieving a low quality sporran from Evilbay, I got the inspiration to just build my own. After all, who knows what I want in a sporran better than me. It is going to be simple for now-all black, no pockets, I hope to have it done for the games in St.Louie on Fri. (oh and it is entirely hand-sewn!!!)
 The leather and tools

The cut out pieces and a pattern(in yellow)

Nearly there, had to stop sewing for the day!

Its not anywhere near the level of some makers but hey, its my first attempt. My fingers are wishing I had an ol tank of a Singer right about now. . .

It looks like a promising start, and it will hold what you want it to. I'm sure you will get much more enjoyment out of this sporran, good for you for taking this upon yourself. The ammount of talent people on this forum never ceases to amaze me.

I agree with McMurdo very talented. For a first attempt this is outstanding. Possibly two observations 1) it the last picture is showing the strap for the sporran belt you might consider placing it higher on the next one. Remember that the sporran will pivot/drape around this point. The higher the pivot point the straighter it will hang. 2) I can't tell if you put any reinforcement on the inside of the sporran for the belt strap. You will put at least 25% more into you sporran then it should ever be required to hold. This puts a lot of stress on the belt strap points. Gluing/sewing and extra piece of leather on the inside at the strap point can help. If you glue an extra piece on the inside back and then sew through all three pieces it will add support.
Looking good. Can't wait to see the final results.

					Yes, looking good so far.
I agree that the strap is too low.

Also, try cutting a one-piece back and flap next time. That way you don't have to sew a hinge joint, which is often not very satisfactory.

Also, also, try to never stitch across your work. Look at the ends of your strap loop...you've essentially perforated the leather like the edges of a postage stamp. Stress will eventually cause it to tear through right there.

Stitch along the long axis of the strap ends instead...that way you aren't putting all the stress on the "perforated" section. Another fix would be to use heavier leather for the loop, with a heavy leather backing piece inside the pouch as was mentioned in a previous post. That would certainly resist tearing.

Berserk as very one has said the sporran looks good. I know you are new to X-Marks but I think you know by now that we are all opinionated. We all know another way of doing EVERYTHING. However, we never criticize any ones work we just provide helpful suggestions. Except in my case, you should do it my way, because as my wife say I’m perfect.
Now what was that word she used after "you are a perfect . . . "

Another option would be to use two slots in the back for your sporran belt to go through.

Having experience of wearing a sporran for a long time, I've grown to appreciate the small pocket/divider in R-Kilts. It keeps my cell, fresh batteries and bills separate from my wallet, keys, camera and used batteries.
Not a criticism, something to think about for your next project. You're not going to build just one are you?

It doesn't look like you're using a double needle sewing technique. Are you familiar with that? It's a lot easier on your fingers and gives a nice seam.
