three choices

ok, for a few months now i have been looking for a second kilt to wear. i have come up with three choices.
1. a casual kilt from scottishclansman.com 250 bucks, morrsion red modern
2. maybe 6 yards of morrison material and make a traditional great kilt out of that. i think the price would be around 400, right?
3. at the celtic croft, a 5 yard great kilt for about 400 bucks.

what do you think? i really want a morrison because its my families' and i need another kilt to wear and display my tartan too. i also need to know if a great kilt is really functional at all, a casual would be great to just put on and go, though a great kilt comes with the extra material to make a hood or something for when it rains(if ever, darn drought!). any help is appreciated. thank you for your time.

Great kilts are antiquated and cumbersome. Unless wearing them for reenacting or costume (*ducks from Halloween thread*), I'd recommend a modern kilt every time.

A question for you, what drew you to scottishclansman.com? Why did you choose them?

I would say go for the modern kilt, great kilts are out of place in the modern world, people do (rightly or wrongly) equate them to a costume. I am sure you will find more occasion to wear the modern than the great kilt. Good luck with your choice whatever it may be.

I agree with the above. The great kilt would probably lie folded up in a drawer and get little use.

Don't know about scottishclanmen but if you are going to spend $250 or more, take a look at Rocky's (USA Kilts) semi-traditional kilts.

For what you are will to spend on fabric or a great kilt you have a lot of choices in modern kilts. Check some our supporters. Since you want wool most kiltmakers can get the tartan you want.

I do agree with those above, stay with the modern kilt unless you expect a lot of visits to renfairs and the like. It isn't really a sensible garment for everyday wear.

I'd do a search of the kilt makers on the board. Pay special attention to their customer service (search threads) and then see if they can accmodate your Morrison needs. O'Neille

You can always turn your great kilt into a regular kilt by folding it in half before you make the pleats, unless you have too much fabric ... like 7 or 8 yards. Then just use a second belt to hold down the extra fabric afterwards. I do this often times, and posted pics of it on my site. For a more casual look, you can pull your shirt down over the belt.

ok, so a casual kilt would be better than a great, sounds fine i was leaning toward a casual kilt anyways.

i had gotten the idea of clansman from the highland games i went to, they has a tent and i grabbed a card. i looked at it and it looks good. reason i like them is that they arent really expensive and they have a great selection.

i'll go check the usa kilt place out.
