When I do wear flashes they are usually a solid color, and usually in "other." These are my homemade knitted ones. Due to health one of my legs varies in size enough that these softer ones are much more comfortable.
When buying/making a nice kilt I like having the tartan flashes...they can come in handy for those rare (for me) formal occasions.
I have even been known to wear tartan flashes with a solid color kilt. It's kinda fun to turn things upside down now and then.

My SWK Heavy Weight Black Watch and Lamont that are on their way come with matching flashes included in the price (and a wooden kilt hanger too!), so I will be wearing those at least to start with.

My solid reds get the most use, followed by my dark navy solids, bottle green solids, then rarely matching tartan.

I had to vote solid color, but that comes with one caveat.
When I ordered my kilt (from a local kilt store), which was an incredibly huge pain and something I'll never duplicate, they messed up and didn't get my flashes ordered. I pressed the issue for over month and then just a week or two before I needed them (i.e. my wedding), they refunded me the cost of the flashes and gave me a pair of solid black.
After the wedding I tried unsuccessfully for six months to find a pair of flashes in my tartan that was under $50. Most places didn't carry the tartan and the Pound Sterling conversion rate killed me on the ones I did find in the UK.
But a few months ago I e-mailed Kathy Lare about something else and thought to ask her about flashes. She said she could get me a pair for about $25. So I jumped at the offer and I now have a pair of tartan flashes.
I'll be able to wear tartan flashes now the next time I kilt up (w/out hiking boots and socks, 'cause I don't wear the flashes then).

I almost always wear red flashes with either lovat green hose (rather regimental and looks good to me) or navy hose with the same red flashes. For evening wear, I have grosgrain red flashes that look a little dressier, especially if I wear the white, hand knit hose.
I have a pair of matching Weathered Robertson tartan flashes, and I wear them occassionally when I wear the weathered kilt, but the red pair get most wear. They just look so good on the regiments that I like them best.

I don't wear flashes. When I'm kilted it's with old fashioned soft gillies. The string runs up my legs (wrapped around of course) and hangs down where I've tied it. Sometimes I wear hose and sometimes I wear wraps around my calves.
Side note: I've got a leather strap I buckle around the top of my calf under hose or wrap to hold the scabbard on my sgian so it doesn't fall out. It's a good sgian and I'd rather not lose it.

So far I have mostly worn solid colored flashes, although I have worn tartan flashes at times.
I do have a couple pair of the woven flashes now and will be trying them out. If It turns out I like them better, that choice may move to the top for me.

I only own tartan flashes... so you can guess where my vote went.

I have a set of red flashes, a set of saffron flashes, and a set of MacLaren tartan flashes. I wear them with the appropriate kilt. I'll be getting a couple more kilts in a wee bit, and they come with flashes.
However, in the past, I've mostly worn the solids, so that's how I voted. I do, however, want (eventually) a set or two of the woven flashes (Santa, are you listening?).

Flashes are too much like a Fancy Dress costume for my taste, my hose stay up just fine without them;
also the Dagger in the sock routine.- am highly unlikely to slit some lifter's throat. so why bother with it? Plus it really upsets Security establishments-especially when they find out it's really a Cigarette lighter, or just a handle by itself stuck down someone's sock.
But that's just me. Kilts are my everyday clothing, so I guess I'm a bit of a Phillistine when it comes to the elegant graces.
Wear whatever you enjoy - with or without the trimmings.
