What happened to that sleepy little town I knew 40 years ago???

It grew up as a desirable retirement area including a Wal*Mart!!! They have, however, done a great job of revitalizing the downtown area and the adjacent historic district so at least there is some compensation so long as you stay away from the strip malls.

Actually three. The main historic district is just north east and west of downtown (think U shape) mainly 1700 and 1800s houses. Further north is Riverside which has houses from the 1900s. Newest is Gent with houses from the 1930's to early 1950's.
2010 is the 300th anniversary of New Bern so its been around some.
