    STUDENTS TO GIVE TARTAN MAKEOVER

    08:50 - 13 October 2007

Students at an Aberdeen art school are to undertake a project aimed at breathing new life into traditional tartans.

The third-year students at Gray's School of Art will design collections featuring tartans such as the Gordon Highlander, Princess Mary, and the more recent Da Vinci.

After being split into mini companies, the students will be asked to develop a brand identity for their designs, and to focus on their target customers.

They will be developing and applying a range of innovative surface treatments to the tartans, which may include quilting, appliqu??, embroidery, spandex and metallic foil effects.

Each group will also create their own fashion label which will promote their individual design signature.

A number of organisations have donated rolls of tartan for the project, including the Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen, which is providing the only military tartan.

An exhibition of the designs will then be launched at Gray's School of Art on Thursday, November 22.

    Ironic timing Robert,

I was just searching to see if the Oregon State University tartan was available. It seems to have died a quiet death.

But, as to your post, what a novel idea and yet another indication of the current kilt boom.

Traditional tartan does not require a breath of "new life",thankyou all the same, Aberdeen.Invent, concoct, manufacture, sell anything you like that may make the tartan wearing world that bit better and be my guest, but leave the traditional tartan alone. We are too short of traditions already.

"What do you want stripes for, MacDuff?
Plain colored wool we've been weaving
for generations not good enough anymore?
I suppose next you will want laces in
your brogues, or god forbid a tassel on
    your sporran."

I totally disagree. Tartan will always be tartan, that won't go away. This is an art assignment to see what creative things they can come up with. This is not a designer using tartan to sell odd clothing. I say lets see what the kids come up with and possibly they will earn some appreciation of the tartan itself.
