Shipping a kilt TO the UK.
Last week I asked my mom to see how much it would cost to ship a DVD from the States to the UK by FedEx with some degree of speed. To get it here, one DVD mind, it would cost $176, or $65 if I could wait a month.
I don't want to even think about what shipping a kilt would cost, but I really want to get it over here. I didn't want to send it through the mail, largely because of the mail strikes that have been happening, but it seems like I'll have no choice, unless anyone here can offer any suggestions for shipping.
I'm still looking for a sporran as well, my old day sporran is pretty well worn out and I really need a new one. So hopefully I'll have found one by time the kilt arrives here.
Cheers,
Nick

Forget FedEx and the lot - have her check the good old Post Office - they have several fairly inexpensive and surprisingly speedy options.

I used to send a lot of items Fedex overseas, but I avoid anything other than paperwork these days. UPS and Fedex have entered the business of collecting import tariffs (of which they get a cut) . The rational is it will speed up business shipments since Fedex can act as the customs agent. Unfortunately this catches individuals sending anything overseas in that same net. The Post Offices don't do this, so it is better to send small shipments via the PO.

USPS Global Priority is a decent deal. I sent a book from Chicago to Cessna152Towser in Hawick and it cost me less than ten bucks to send and got there in something like five days. Didn't have to sill out but a very short customs declaration type form.

I don't know about the US to UK but from Canada to the UK or reverse Canada Post & Royal Mail are the way to go. Sounds like this DVD was expensive to ship. I've gotten a few cd's from England for just a couple of quid. Shipping to the States takes much longer for some reason. BTW isn't DVD formats different from here to there? In NA we are region 2.

CCGA3359 makes a good point there...gotta be sure it's compatible. When I was in the UK some years ago I found a complete box set of Fawlty Towers (not available in the US) on VHS and gleefully took it to the counter in the shop. The fella caught my accent and asked if I was from the USA and reminded me that those tapes wouldn't play over here.
