His and Her's Moose Anter, Pewter Sgian Dubhs

I had two more blades from AC to use. Many had expressed their preference for simple sgians so I made two. One is a robust version with a Damascus blade and the other is a more petite version with a carbon blade, some file work and a crocodile sheath. I had the idea of making a matched set of his and her's sgians. Sometimes I have to wonder who messed with my brain. Both have poured silver pewter bolsters and pommels. Oh and they are made from moose antler.

I was building two so there was more building and less picture taking. Nothing is different in preparation than any of my previous builds.

    Initial assembly

Melted pewter while preparring to pour bolsters, Then I flipped them and poured the pommels in my duct tape and soda can molds.

    After pouring them

    Rough shaping

Final shaping with 180 grit on the belt, 600 and then 1000 on a random orbit sander. Then grey rouge on a wheel. I also did a little scallop file work on the "ladies" sgian.

    Finished

The slim profile on the Ladie's sgian

My first three Pewter mounted sgians

    pewter/ antler sgians

Beautiful work! As I have recently acquired some antler material, I am very interested in imitating your work, (as best I can.) I understand the melting / pouring and the polishing parts, what do you use for the rough shaping? What do you melt your pewter in? Thanks for the pictures and the inspiration.
    Respectfully,

I use a stationary belt and disc sander for the rough shaping w/ 50, 100, and 180 grit aluminum oxide belts. I have a small steel ladle for melting small amounts of pewter. I think mine is from an old toy soldier pouring set. I wish I had a small one inch belt sander for close detail work.
