    Sean nós

I'm looking for a recording of "Óró 'Sé do bheatha 'bhaile". I learned how to sing it in class this morning, but I'd like a recording to sing along to. It's a hauntingly gorgeous song. Anybody have it? Thanks.

(if you don't know it, here's a video on YouTube of a sean nós singer)

There are several versions on iTunes. I found two versions a ca pella of this particular tune that I liked. One female and one male. Thanks for the source. Buying and syncing now.

I don't really care for Sinead O'Connor's version. Too new age for my tastes. Sean nós is about tradition!

So now that I've actually gone on iTunes to check out what they had, I'm really surprised! In fact, I had to buy three versions because I couldn't settle on just one! I got the Wolfe Tones version, Clancy Brothers w/Makem version, and the sean nós version by Joe Heaney.

    Thanks Bradley!

Excellent. I settled on the Joe Heaney version. Had that warm "authentic" you're sitting in front of the guy feel.

Yeah, i checked out the Sinead version... doesn't do it for me either.

You know, Greg, when you get back, you're going to have to come down to the South Side and meet my friend Ross Crean. Ross is just releasing his second album and it's entirely in Gaelic. You two would make great collaborators on some musical projects.

Ross did a short set before my other buddy John's band went on once and there was a little old red (thanks to L'Oreal, no doubt) haired lady sitting in the audience in front of us. She had on a Kelly Green sweatshirt with a big embroidered map of Ireland and "South Side Irish" on it. Ross did a few standard numbers in English and then started to do a tune in Gaelic. This guy has, like, a three octave range and he showed it off on this tune. When it's over, I hear the old lady lean over to her daughter and whisper, "...was he singing in Jewish?"

I really like the version the Twilight Lords did on Women of Ireland.

What a great song to learn in Sean Nos. In my town we used to have a regular Sean Nos group that meet 1 Sunday a month... but has since died. Actually i was supposed to go to one on Saturday at the local college... but other things got in the way. Did they give you the words written out or was it very traditional? meaning no written anything and no musical instruments?

You might want to check out a great CD set called "Celtic Mouth Music"
