					Couple of quick notes.
The one with the kilties piping themselves back after battle is basically all that returned down that road. There is a before and after picture of that road somewhere on line. Take a good look at the background: most modern croppings of that photo don't show the devastation of that battle. The piper may be a Victoria Cross recipients, some one wrote that all the pipers here received a VC but this piper is not named.

The picture listed as favourite, jumping the trenches, is actually from '39. It's a London Scottish training session. Look at the soldier in the centre, at his socks. That is the only picture I have found that shows a soldier wearing a skean dhu in a battle situation (although it is simulated).

Great info, thanks. I knew the picture of the trench jumping was a training pic, but I didn't know the details. I just love the visual. I can only imagine what it would be like to see that group flying at you.

And to further note, The Jocks depicted in this photo are from the 26th Highland Infantry Brigade, 9th Scottish Division, returning from the Battle of Bazentin Ridge in July, 1916. (Chappel, The Scottish Units in the World Wars, p.20) The photo is from the IWM's collection.
