Kilt vs. Tartan?

Living in the middle of America and with no Scottish ancestry that I can find I have no ties to the tartan to find it important to wear. I love the tartan kilts I have and wear them with pride and respect but no connection. I like kilts, I have solid kilts, and tartan kilts. If it looked right to me I would wear polka dot kilts. I have always loved to wear colors and kilts are a way I can do that without looking like a clown.

For me Tartan Kilts are more important, that said I do like solid kilts as well, just not as much. My reasoning is that I started wearing kilts mostly to express my pride in my heritage.

How do you know that? Do you own a pair of trews?

One of my best friends wears trews on a regular basis to Scottish functions, and loves them.

While I don't actually know that trews aren't as comfortable as a kilt, I can't imagine that any form of trousers would be. That being said, I do like the look of them and might consider wearing them somewhere that trousers were mandated. However, given a choice between bifurcation and freedom, the kilt wins every time whether it be tartan or solid colored. (though I do prefer tartan kilts over solid kilts)

A believe as a scot that tartan is maest important, as family tartans derived fae Scotland and therefore i wear mine as an identity tae ma family i wid never wear a plain kilt as i associate them wi Ireland.

For me, it's all about the tartan. I have no objection to solid colour kilts, such as a saffron or green kilt for Irish heritage, or a tweed kilt a la the Balmoral ghillies -- but when push comes to shove, I wear a kilt as a symbol of my heritage, not necessarily for "freedom". Modern kilts -- well, they're just not my thing, though I don't begrudge anyone wearing them.

I'll be quite honest: I like trousers -- trews, cords, plus fours, etc. I'm not ashamed of it. I know it's not a popular opinion around here, but I'm not going to hide it. There are sometimes I just don't want to wear a kilt, and trews would be a nice alternative on those occasions. A country gent's shooting attire complete with hose and plus fours -- that's a great look. Take a look at what the gents are wearing in The Quiet Man, or Hector's outfits in Monarch of the Glen -- that's what I like.

But again, that's just me. I wouldn't dare force it on anyone else. Just don't knock trews until you've tried them.

As expected, on the subject of traditionalism, Todd pretty much nails my feelings too. I'm in it for the tartan. I have no objection to non-traditional or modern kilts, and I own a Buzz Kidder OD canvas, I just don't care for them on me.

I like pants too - I have a couple of suits that I honestly look forward to wearing, and a pair of LL Bean chinos that are more comfortable than any kilt I've ever owned!

So, yeah. For me also, it's all about the tartan.

Yeah, after seeing Ralph Barclay's trews in person...

LL Bean Chinos are great -- they are my "work uniform". I'm an "L.L. Bean junkie", to paraphrase the late Jean Shepherd in "A Christmas Story".

i like the look of tartan/plaid better than solid though i do have a solid black kilt for dress purposes and i mean for dress purposes. if i wear to wear a tux jacket, the kilt would match perfectly and the fabric is almost the same.
