Indeed they are Beowulf. I am no athlete and pretty much just throw in the few games that I attend just for fun, but even the pros will stop and give you pointers. It is a rare sport where someone competing , even at the lower levels, will give you tips that just might help you to best their throws. I shagged cabers for the pros at Stone a couple of years ago and Larry pulled me off to the side, got my name and announced to the crowd that while each athlete that was tossing the caber only had to pick it up three times I had to help carry back every throw for 2 flights of athletes. Each and every pro and legend that competed that day thanked me and spoke to me as if I was just another one of them and I have gotten several good tips from them at other games as well. This truly is a big family. Shriner some games have the masters class starting at age 40 by the way. I hope to meet you at Dunedin next year and share a good single malt with you if the occasion arrises. It will be my first Masters competition if they start at 40.

The Tampa Bay Highland Games next weekend Nov. 3rd here in Tampa, the Master will start at 40...

If anyone is interested in learning about the Highland Games, Larry Brock ( who won the Pro division @ Stone Mountain this year) Has a clinic every fall.More info can be found on his website www.brockthrow.com
Also, Larry Satchwell will be there again this year helping with the clinic.


I've only had the chance to compete once, and had a blast. It is alot of fun, and I will be throwing in the Master division in '08.
