But I don't wear them very often and now that I've become addicted to Lewis Kilt Hose I own eleven different colors of Lewis kilt hose, but haven't seen the need to invest in a white pair yet.

Really great photos, Ron! Makes your point.

I think that white should only be worn by pipers. Cream socks are fantastic with formal outfits, then set them off well especially with Ghillies. Rental shops in my opinion supply better outfits than most people put together, so don't knock the rental outfitters

So, with the wear-what-you-feel-comfortable insight in mind, what's more acceptable with formal wear: cream or colored hose? From a traditional standpoint?

Cream, I believe, though the most appropriate would be argyle or diced hose.

Soccer socks should be long enough. I also use tube socks, as well as the regular hose.

I wore white hose once, at my wedding. They looked great next to my bride's dress. I always wear cream hose with my Prince Charlie and ghillie brogues. I have oatmeal, lovat blue and bottle green ones that I use for casual wear.

I think if you're wearing a PC with a white wingtip shirt, and a white fur sporran then white hose would be your best matching option. I think black, or blue, or green or whatever matches your kilt may work, but it seems to me under some circumstances that white or cream is your nicest option. I have lots of hose, but my formal sporran is white, and while wearing a white wingtip, white hose seem to go perfect.

Back when I had a pair of off-white (or cream), I tended to wear them with athletic shoes, like what Ron shows in his pics. They didn't seem to go as well with the darker colored shoes and boots that I own... Granted, I didn't own any ghillie brogues until recently. Now, they'd probably look better...
