			Kilted on Amtrak

Due to the fires in Los Angeles, and a stack of 57 papers to grade, and a minor starter issue on my car I haven't had time to get looked at, I decided that I am going to take the train to Los Angeles this weekend instead of driving. (Well from where I am it is a 2 hour train ride and a 2-ish hour Amtrak Bus ride). I wanted to take my Utilikilt with me, and I hate packing it (On the train, I just like to take my duffel bag, and that means the kilt needs ironing on the other end). Unlike many of you, I am not a full time kiltie -- the classes I teach require too much climbing and painting ( I ruin a $50 pair of jeans each semester -- and that is far cheaper than ruining a $150 (or more) kilt)
I wonder what if any reactions I will get on the train. Of course with a stack of grading, I may not notice any. I often wear the UK on long trips because it has large pockets in the front, which means I don't have back problems from sitting on my wallet, and it is far more comfortable than pants at any time, and I hate traveling so I like to be comfortable!

 I'll report back

 Cheers

I've travelled on Amtrak many times kilted with only the occasional query or comment and never any negative. However I don't wear a utilikilt, only traditional kilts so your experience may be different.

I don't know about kilts on the train or bus "but" I learned back in 1959 that you always carry your wallet in your front pocket..If your wallet is like mine and two or three inches thick.
This will stop a pain in the butt from sitting on a lump for prolonged periods and back problems in the future.
It islike walking with one thick soled shoe and one thin soled shoe.
Besides it is harder to pick your pocked if the wallet is in front.
Now that I don't wear trousers any more this is a mute point for me

I can't fit my wallet in my front pocket. My legs are too big. Thats alot of why I find kilts so much more comfortable. No pant legs catching and bidding on my knees and legs.

If your wallet is 2-3 inches thick and causes problems with carrying and sitting on it, maybe you need to cull out those dry-cleaning receipts from 1997, phone numbers with no name or date, and expired coupons and credit cards.

I guess things have not changed much over there in the past 2 years or so. In 2005, my pal Dave W and I travelled to several parts of the USA - sometimes flying and sometimes courtesy of Amtrak. Both of us were kilted throughout the three week trip. The Amtrak journeys took us from NYC to Washington DC, and from Portland OR to Seattle WA and neither of us attracted any comments whatsoever - neither complimetary nor derogatory (as far as we were aware!).
Dave was usually in tartan but I prefer to travel in Utilikilts. Here we are before boarding the train at Portland:
