    Kilt: Outfit or Garment?

    Ok the kilt is not a costume.

    But mostly…
    Do you think of it and use it as a garment?
    Or, primarily as the foundation garment for an outfit – kilt with accessories?
    A style. A fashion! (heh-heh).
    Both? All?

    I’m a newbie. I’ve been out and outfitted a few times, but mostly I wear the kilt at home.
    Without accessories. I have them but they aren’t needed.
    So I’m currently using the kilt mostly as a garment.

    I regularly play/practice guitar at night. As the seasons change I change locations from my yard to my unheated garage and then in winter to my halfway-heated basement. (The rest of my family has the run of the house proper).

    For the current cooler autumn temperatures in southeastern Pennsylvania I’ve switched from lightweight to medium-weight kilts (I don’t have a tank yet).

    I’ve read that the first accessory is the sporran. Well yes for public and utility.
    Although the accessories that I expect to eventually have the largest collection of are belts & buckles -- I just love all the choices.

    But at home for me the first accessory is hose. Cotton, then wool.
    And headgear. Cotton driving/golf caps, then leather, and finally a nice wool caubeen.
    When I go to the watch cap then it'll be too cold for the kilt.

    Maybe I’m putting together “at home” outfits after all.
    I'll call them “sub-casual”.

    To me the kilt is just a garment, and article of clothing. It's pretty much a non-event to me to wear a kilt since I wear it all the time.

    I wear my kilt with just about anything I would wear with any other sort of lower half garment, practicality and style allowing.

    Various kilts do best in various settings, either more casual or as part of a more refined outfit. Really, other than looking better and being MUCH more comfortable kilts serve the exact same role as pants.

    I also consider my kilts as garments. When not at work, I wear kilts daily (work requires coveralls). My usual choices are the casual or contemporary kilts. Tartans are reserved for more dressy occasions but not always. An SWK with a nice rugby jersey is a great pub outfit. The same SWK with a button down shirt and the appropriate accessories looks very smart.

    I think of the kilt as a garment. I mostly just wear mine around the house. The one I wear the most is an all cotton black watch sport kilt that is great for just lounging around the house. The pleats don't hold for crap, but wear it for comfort not style. That being said, I wear a nicer kilt if I'm leaving the house.

    I wear kilts ,mostly as a garment, at home. The only time I'm not kilted at home is for work such as re-piping my well last week, where I had to crawl around under my house. Kilts just do not do well when crawling around on your belly or knees. For that I don an old well worn pair of jeans. For public wear, I don;t wear kilts as often as a lot of members, but I do wear kilts to go out to eat, as well as other occasions sometimes. The other occasions are starting to be just because I feel like wearing a kilt.

    I'm pretty new to kilting myself. I wear mine around the house 'cause it's comfortable. But I've worn it out to dinner, to church and (last Saturday) to a kilted afternoon at the Duke of Perth on the Northside of Chicago with Auld Argonian.

    I got 'the question' for the first time from a group of women who were on a 'girl's day' in the city. They insisted on having photos taken with me!

    My more formal kilts tend to be worn only with the full set of accessories as part of the outfit for a big occasion, but most of my kilts are casual and I regard them as comfortable garments.

    For me, all my kilts are garments.

    All can be worn casually, most can be worn semi-formally and some can be worn truly formally.

    I do not wear costumes or uniforms!

    Garments for sure.

    Seems like a sporran might get in the way of your guitar playing...you might consider a vest as an alternative to a sporran to carry your "stuff."

    And hey, have some fun...leave home with it.
