It looks wonderful and should look great when it's done.

In my humble opinion it will clash too much with the front - the whole point of the St David's pattern is the unusual striping and the rear will ruin that.

Why have an occasional flash when the pleats move when you can have it looking as good as the front?

Sorry but on this one I cannot be enthusiastic.

For my opinion, I like the military style of pleating! -and yes it will look different from the back than from the front. That's the point. The sett has all the colors in it, so how can it clash?

But then, I'm just a poor colonial, who wears the kilt everyday!

When you walk, you get flashes of the under pleating. To my eye, pleating to sett is the boring look.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this com-pleated.

    Good on ya!

For me the main attraction of the kilt is the movement of the pleats and to have a colour change as well is a bonus - tartans seem to have the wonderful property of being an identification, and yet provide a whole range of different options for pleating.

I'm still working away on a kilt with 50 (fifty) small pleats, where the reveal is black and grey, but the inner folds are alternatly red and white - mostly. Hopefully it will look rather striking when worn.

The pleat flash will be eye-popping, O'Neille. And the swing should be outstanding with a double-deep pleat. This one may require video, not just pix.

Yes, the flash looks very impressive. I like to change the color of the back of the kilt. I have even been asked why the back of the kilt is a different color than the front.

James - the St David's has no military connections whatsoever and you simply cannot apply the same philosophy to a bi-coloured striped kilt as you can to a full normal tartan.

One colour is going to be completely submerged in normal view when it isnt swishing around.

No wonder this idea hasn't been seen before - no Welshman would be seen dead in it.

I don't have to live with it, a fact for which I am truly grateful.

I did ask for opinions. It's good to know you were elected spokesman for all Welshmen. Although the tartan has no direcect military connection, the following is one example of a military and St. David connection:

The strong and enduring relationship between the United States Marine Corps and the Royal Welch Fusiliers date back to the time of the Boxer Rebellion in China when they fought together as a combined Allied unit.

Annual greetings and salutations have been traditionally been rendered on the occasion of the Marine Corps Birthday
and on St. David's Day, birthday of the patron saint of Wales. Of interest also is the origin of the American Naval mascot, a goat, which was originally given by the Royal Welch to the United States Marine Corps, who at that time came under the command of the United States Navy. At the time of the Marine Corps' evolution into its own arm of the service, they selected the bulldog as a form of distinction from the Navy, while the Navy retained the goat as its particular mascot.

I don't doubt military and St David's connections for one moment O'Neille.

I was of course merely talking in kilt terms or rather cilt terms.

I doubt that there are elections for such a position - but I live in Wales and have seen quite a few of the St David's around, especially on March 1. Not one I have seen has ever been pleated this way.

Of course you no doubt feel that you are making an original statement and that is of course your right - as I said, I don't have to live with it.

But the St David's was designed to be distinctively different - to say "Wales" rather than "Scotland", hence the striping. When you pleat to either colour it's going to look monotone from the back and two tone from the side. Regular tartans offer better pleating choices that provide more options that do not affect the aesthetics as much.

However as I appear to be a prophet crying aloud in the wilderness I shall go back to my locusts and wild honey.

Please do let us see the pics of the finished article being worn though.
