All-black balmoral?
I have scoured the internet and this forum to the best of my ability and I cannot find an all-black balmoral. Are they considered "incorrect"? It seems like they would look really good, so I'm surprised not to be able to find any.
Does anybody know somewhere I haven't looked, or have any reasons for why I shouldn't get one? I personally don't like the look of the red pom on the black hat.
Also, I am just curious — will a balmoral protect you from the cold? If no, are there any hats that do that also work with a kilt. I have a Russian fur hat (you know, with the flaps) which may well be the warmest hat in existence, but with a kilt?
Thanks in advance!
Matt!

Hey, neighbor! Welcome from Flint! Check out The Highland Fling shop in Lake Orion...I'm pretty sure he offers all black; if not, I'm sure he can tell you where to find it.

One hundred twenty three dollars and some change is WAY WAY beyond what I would pay for ANY hat, I don,t care how good they are. Unless the are hand sewn with gold thread.
I got mine on Ebay for less than $35.

Something you can do is cut off the pom and use velcro to reattach it. This also allows you to get other poms from the hobby store and attach ones that match your outfit. (I have both red and black poms for mine, and may add a green one.)
A good wool balmoral does help keep your head warm. I wore mine all last winter and enjoyed it a lot, although it doesn't do a lot for your ears.

Try www.savannahkilts.com Jim Byous the owner makes them at a resonable price. I have an Irish Caubeen made by him and and can vouch for the quality of his work.

Diane will knit you an early style bonnet in any color you want, with or without the pom-pom. I own the brownish one in the pic and love it!
Also, if you're out in the cold, the knit bonnets are stretchy enough to be yanked down over your ears, like any other knit cap....

The black balmoral with a red POM, is the officila headdress of the HRH. As a former associate of the Black Watch, I can relate to your view, but tradition is tradition.
I know where to find one if you like.
