    Flannel kilts?

I know SportKilts sells a BW flannel "Cozy Kilt". Looks like something I'd like.

I bought 5 yds of 57" wide BW flannel in anticipation of making one with knife pleats and some hidden pockets.

I figured I'll have to sew the pleat edges down (like the Xkilt) thinking the flannel wouldn't hold a crease.

Any heads up on a DIY flannel kilt? Planning on just using it for camping and such.

BTW, school a newbie. Whats a TANK? I'll I can figure is "Traditional" and "Kilt"

"Tank" get's it's name because it's "built like a tank."

Yes, a "Traditional", wool, 8 yard kilt.

My only suggestion would be to make sure you sew down your pleats at least 6 inches. Flannel doesn't hold pleats as well as other fabric so they will be more likely to come undone. Comfy around the house kilts are awesome, so good luck!

    Traditional
    Above
    Nee (yeah, I know)
    Kilt

My best guess other than the correct and somewhat too obvious answer

A friend of mine has a flannel kilt that he says he loves to wear around the house because it is so comfy! Good luck with your project!

Flannel, unless you mean a REAL wool flannel, and not the lightweight stuff that JoAnnes fabric sells, has very little structure to it. Honestly, if I were going to make a kilt out of flannel I would forget the idea of accurate pleating becaue I'm pretty sure that whatever you do is not going to stay, it will wrinkle and fold over and be a mess in minutes. Instead, don't even bother, just:

Cut to length, plus three inches.
    serge the raw edge
fold that over to "fake" a waistband.

Hem the ends...right end and left end, forget a fringe.

with the fake "waistband" all set up, pleat roughly to some repeating unit in the tartan, and don't stress over perfection
run one line of stitching about an inch below the top of the kilt, below the waistband.

.....and wear it much like a feili-beig...or "little kilt" around the house or even to Ren Faire.

A friend recently got Sportkilt's flannel kilt for wearing around the house, like the Reverend Sister's friend. I know he loves it. I'll have to report back how it looks when I see it.

Alan, thanks for the info. It's mostly a practice run for lining up the setts and general kiltmaking. I'd rather practice on something less expensive before I go ll out on a tank.
