Jude has two MacRae long kilt dresses that she got off eBay, and a MacKay short kilt from USA Kilts. And she is more than supportive of my kilt wearing activities.

I think traditionally it's common sense. Back in the day one only wore their clan tartan, so when a women wed she not only took her husbands name but also his clan tartan. Wearing a skirt in the same tartan, or a shawl, a sash or anything in that tartan would just complete the look.

I just picked up some medium weight MacDonald Dress for a skirt for my wife. Now she needs to decide what length, pleated or not...

Because we're better dressed than her now? Because we're garnering more attention? Because we can get the ladies? Or in my case none of the above.
