Matching a navy jacket
So I got that Navy Blue Argyle from ebay a while back and craves a vest (waistcoat...whatever) to go with it. Does the Navy wool pretty much match from manufacturer to manufacturer? Does anybody have a good source for vests/waistcoats?
And, not to incur the wrath of the assembled multitudes, I have to find some lower-key buttons for this jacket...these are very bright silver and rather distracting...who's had luck with some pewter buttons or even a black version?

You could always go to your local Joannes Fabric store. They have rows and rows of buttons, some of which should meet your need.
Or go on line to somewhere like here or here or here

There is no 'standard' navy. Even within the same manufacturer it can vary from one dye lot to another.

I hear what you're saying; my idea of Navy Blue is so dark that it's almost black and this is definitely not that kind of Navy Blue. Just trying to find something close enough...precise dead on perfect is going to be really unlikely.

I have trouble matching navy even in person as fabric varies so much in appearance based on lighting, movement, etc.
But navy goes with lots of things. Is there perhaps a coordinating vest you might consider? Grey, or fawn perhaps? It depends on what tartan you plan to wear.

Yep, exactly what I was going to say, only not as well. I highly doubt you'll match it by colour, shade , weight or texture. Why not take on a new hobby? That of waistcoat manufacturer? Different colours depending on the kilt or function.

Grant, it's funny you mention that as I just decided to make myself several vests. A new tailoring challenge!

I was thinking something like this as well a complimentary colour would be much better than a navy that is not a match, you might also look for a tartan waistcoat.

I second McMurdo's suggestion of complimentary color. Red or Maroon would look quite handsome with Navy. A regular suit's vest can be modified to a kilt waistcoat with a couple of safety pins. Check those second hand stores.

When it gets cold, I often wear a grey sweater vest with my blue jacket. I'm not sure what color fawn would be. I picture a little bambi with all the spots?
