Go for it! Greatcoats are great with kilts.

Here's my Grand Illusions replica Union Cavalry greatcoat. (sorry folks, Grand Illusions retired from busines).

Yes, that's the Grand Canyon...a neighbor of mine. And the brown leather Utilikilt.

Only an olde fool would stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon in a kilt on a cold day and take the freezing updraft.

Had thought about trying to convert the greatcoat to an Inverness Cape (which I also covet), but on advice from this wonderful board decided to leave well enough alone.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but as long as we're talking about military jackets and kilts... what does everyone think of a U.S. Navy-style peacoat with a kilt?

In my opinion, I think it could work. I've seen footage of Edinburgh's 2005 Hogmanay Celebration where guitarist Sam Lewis was wearing something similar a peacoat while kilted - and that looked fine. So, I think it's really up to personal choice, really. Comfort is the key.

Methinks a bit too long...but I'll let you know for sure after I get my Navy tartan semi-trad from Rocky and try it out with my pea coat.

Civil War greatcoats (with capes) here:
    http://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg13d.html

I was wearing my pea coat (US Navy issue version) last night and wondered about using it with a kilt. Worn unbuttoned it might look OK; buttoned up - no. The length is mid-thigh and would just look wrong IMO....

I'm inclining toward a replica G-1 flight jacket with mine. My favorite squid flew TBF's off a baby flat-top... I've got a Swedish pea-coat somewhere, hmmm.

There was an American WWII bomber jacket in the antique store in York where I found the greatcoat. It was over 200 pounds, and the long, wool greatcoat was only 65. Don't know exactly how they arrived at that, but there it is. Anyway, what I meant to say is that it looked like it would go darn well with the kilt.

It's always been amazing to see photos of my dad and his crew dressed in the WWII flying gear...you WISH you had one of those shearling coats that they had to wear. We bought him one of the leather bomber jackets to wear to his reunion a few years back...he wore it twice and gave it back to me.

There's precious little of the genuine vintage stuff left.

I gave away all my uniforms and my Naval officers full trench a couple years after getting out. I wish I'd have kept my sweaters and coat now. They switched from the full trench to the 3/4 around 1990 and I would rather freeze to death than wear one of them. We were allowed to continue to wear the full length as long as they remained in "good repair".
