There is a difference between ignorance and... stupidity/idiocy/crass behaviour/jacka**edness, etc.
In my book, an ignorant person is not necessarily to be treated with disdain. It may be that they simply don't know any better. The gal at the store who curiously asks "is today some sort of Scottish holiday?" is simply ignorant, and a kind return may educate her a bit if she's open to it.

HOW a person reacts to their own ignorance might be cause for harsh return. If they choose to react to their ignorance with a jacka** remark then they may expect the same from me, or I'll simply ignore them.
Ignorants can be educated. Jacka**es are already lost and not worth the breath it takes to answer back!
