A walk on the wild side!

Since we have off for the Thanksgiving Holiday break, I thought that I'd take our Siberian out for a hike. The temp. was in the upper 20's with a brisk wind and I wanted to wear my new kilt out for the first time. I figured that I'd be cold because it was a tad windy, but both of us struck out for the BLM land back behind the house. I have wondered how I would react when I met a person out on the trail when kilted (I'm a newbie at this). The sun was out and we were hiking along when another hiker appeared down the trail coming toward us. Uh-oh, I thought, here comes my first encounter. As I got closer the older gentleman had a suprized look on his face and finally said,"Now aren't we stylish, out walkin' the dog with your kilt. That is one nice looking kilt. What tartan is that?" I expected some sort of semi-intelligent comment about the wind blowing up my front panel, but he was thoroughly interested in the tartan, what it was, the type of kilt, where I got it, etc. It turns out he used to be in a pipe band and still had his old kilt hanging up in the closet. He did ask if the Siberian was an accessory for the kilt. I was wearing my new SWK Weathered Lamont and my Husky is a mahogany and white. I told him no and we parted company after visiting for about 15-20 minutes. As we continued our hike, I did not feel cold at all (though my kneecaps were somewhat chilled) and was warmed by the comments about my kilt. I had started the hike with apprehension about wearing the kilt and headed home with a jaunty step proud to be wearing my kilt. I'll be leading a hike with visiting family during the Turkey Day break and you can be certain I'll be wearing my kilt!

Yes, wearing a kilt usually brings positive encounters and helps introduce you to new people. You will stride out with greater confidence every time.

Well done. One day I am going to have to get a kilt in a Gordon tartan, so I can be the accessory for my Gordon Setter.

She does sniff at the grouse foot kilt pin I have, she has also sniffed at all my sporrans, leather and otherwise, however she's a very gentle dog that we have had for about 14 years so I have no worries.

					Hey McNulty,
Ain't it great?! You'll be having kilt nights in New Castle ere long.

Kilt conversations are real common when I'm out hiking too. Folks just feel relaxed and friendly around a kilt in the boonies. Don't ever remember a smart remark when hiking kilted.
