I get away with regular black ones when I dress it down, but with the formal Prince Charlie or Argyle jackets, I think they really make it authentic. Except that Ghillies aren't traditional to highland dress. A low quarter, buckled chucka is closer to traditional.
Ghillies are actually Victorian.
