On the rare occasions when I actually encounter someone seriously saying "If you [insert arbitrarily chosen behavior here] you'll go to hell!" I like to just take the opportunity to ask "so, what you're saying is... Jesus died in vain?"
As for the tartan vs solid color issue, I've actually had fewer people notice the solid color kilt. I'm guessing that's because it's black, and doesn't always grab your attention. And it may also have to do with the fact that if they don't recognize it as a kilt, they are less comfortable asking about it. When they do notice, the reaction is about the same.
What I do find odd is that more people ask if I'm irish than scottish. But either way, it's a good chance to practice a phony accent.

I think I've been slighted. I challenge you to a duel - cooked linguine at 50 paces.
I am weird, I am strange, I'm "not normal", I am who I choose to be.
I am an individual.

Ah, I think I've found somebody else who understands the very deep philosophy behind "Nyeah, if he's not a bunny, where's his ears?"

Hmm. Only Ulster Scots, eh? So, only mainly lowland-Scot, ex-pats are allowed to wear highland attire?
Wow. I have a helluva time trying to explain to people how I can both have Irish heritage, yet wear my Stewart tartans. Trying to explain the history of Northern Ireland and the Ulster Scots (of which i'm descended) is always a challenge!

These issues would be dealt with easier if more people were kilted. It's all about cultural paradigm.
And if should I die today and find myself in Christian Heaven, I'm sure there would be plenty of kilties there.

Does it really matter what you're heritage is?
