    political posts...

    Gents,

I've removed two posts with political statements -- I would refer you to the house rules here at Xmarks regarding these type of posts.

    Regards,

    Todd

No service for me, but thank you for what you do and have done.

The Marine in my family was my maternal grandfather Otto Frishman. Born in Saxony Germany, he emigrated to the US prior to WWI. The family story is to escape a pending arranged marriage.

In WWI he enlisted in the USMC and became a SSgt and interpreter and served at Belleau Wood – the original “Devil Dogs”.

I have no service myself either- I was going through physicals and discovered that my right knee is arthritic. I have a long and proud military heritage. I have my great great grandfather Wolfe's musket, bayonet, Bible, and all of his officers badges (not to mention his immigration paperwork) from his service in the Civil War. I have two ancestors on my mothers side (Leddy's) who served in the Union Irish Brigades. All of my uncles on my mothers side (pilots) and a few others whom I can't think of off the top of my head. So as previously stated- thank you all for your service. It means more to us than we can ever express. Here's one for the whole lot o' ya!

Please 'splain for us non-military (or at least for me!): what is a Devil Dog and a Jar Head? Is "jar head" because of the hair cut? And, since we are at it, what is the derivation of the term "leather neck"? Are there any other names that I need to be "up" on?
THANKS for the explanations and for your service!!

For an interesting article about the "Devil Dog", please visit:

The author provides a very interesting & respectful look at the "Teufelshunde"/"Devil Dog" story from WWI. He also does mention his sources.

    Regards,

    Todd
