It's relatively easy to get your hands on some cedar (the aromatic kind...not the stuff that you use on the front porch) these days. Not only are there composite sheets of cedar shavings but there are also nice little grooved cedar segments that can be used to line a drawer bottom or a whole closet if you're so inclined. My "bargain bunny" sporran is upstairs in a drawer and the sporran is filled with aromatic cedar balls (they're mothball size- the naptha variety, by the way) that I picked up at Walmart. Moths do a number on fur as well as wool so take heed.

And that mothball joke? Jeeeeez....that was all the rage back in grammar school (and I'm 55 now)...I suppose that one could say that "the oldies are the goodies" but in the case of that one....

The idea that cedar repels moths is an old myth. At best, it masks the scent of wool so moths don't find it. Lots of things will do that, including the aforementioned juniper and eucalyptus.

Moths are not a particular problem by me, but I keep my kilts in moth-proof garment bags and my sporrans in zip-loc bags.

Here's one company's page with a couple of solutions:

    http://www.organize.com/cepadrli.html

...and here's a company that sells the planks that I mentioned only it looks like they're charging top dollar. I've seen this stuff on sale at the home improvement centers for a somewhat more reasonable price:

I suppose that you could cover one wall of a closet and get effective results. Some of the instructions that I'm seeing suggest that you glue this stuff in place with Liquid Nails...DON'T! Nice finishing nails and find the studs to nail them into, please.

I've seen several older houses in my area that have cedar lined closets that were installed as original equipment (which is to say that it's 50-100 years old) and I've seen a few truly cocked-up jobs that have been done recently by the homeowners. Do a nice job or call someone in that can.
