I just sent the writer of the article the following note:

    Ms. McEwan,

I am originally from Scotland. I agree with some of your comments regarding kilts on The View. Specifically, I too wish that kilts and transgender, cross-dressing etc. were not part of the same discussion as they have nothing to with each other. I did find one of your comments a bit offensive as well as incorrect. Your idea that Scotland has come into the modern era and we now have pants as well as electricity is condescending at best.

While it is true that in the modern era the kilt has been used primarily for ceremony and special occasions it's use is growing and a large number of those gentlemen wearing it are using it as regular everyday wear. This is particularly true of the men choosing contemporary kilts. While I don not wear one everyday I do wear one regularly, partially because of events that I do, but also at times because I just want to. No special occasion needed. There are probably more people wearing kilts today than at anytime in history.

Oh and to your comment about electricity:

Certainly electricity and the phone are arguably the two developments that have brought about our modern world, so I would point out that Alexander Bell was born in Scotland and Thomas Edison came to us from Scottish roots on his mother's side. So I guess we can thank Scotland for doing their bit to get us all into the modern era. Just thought you should know.
