my only flying experience was international, and they didn't care for my belt, or my medical equipment I have to carry. I think those lines where you have to remove your belt is just so they can watch people lose their trousers.

    ROFL, I needed that...

I probably would've flown kilted. I've been kilted when I visited a courthouse to take care of a ticket that I got. No big deal... Got wanded. I've been wanded before for wearing hiking boots @ the airport (pre-9/11). The metal hardware on the boots set the metal detectors off.

Of course we do. You have to remember, all of the 9-11 flights were internal flights.

Ever since the first time I flew kilted my bits have insisted on kilts for future flights.

I go with the UK Survival II and unsnap the cargo pockets for the scanner. Very easy. I don't resnap them though just put them in that pocket thing on the seat back in front of me. Easier to fit into the sardine seats.

And hey, let them wand away. Seems like about half the bifurcated folks get wanded too. They wand ladies in skirts. Why not gents in kilts?

I'm with Ron here. Kilts (UK's) have always been a non issue when flying. Some airports I set of the detectors, some I don't, but I've never been pulled for a random check.

I fly occasionally in in my traditional kilts. Every now and then it takes a couple extra minutes because the guy doesn't know what to do with you but other than that it's fine. Just leave the SD's at home

I just got back from seeing my Brother and Sister and their families down in AZ I flew kilted and had no problems. I was wearing my clergy traditional which has just two straps and just simply alerted them to the buckles still got wanded, but better that than laxness and letting something slip by on say so.
I was asked if the buckles came off to which I replied "if they do the kilt does and I don't think we want to go there". It is much easier to simply remove the sporran and place it in the bin. A word about the sgain dubh and kilt pin --pack them in your check through--don't risk losing them.

All in all I'd say fly kilted it's fun and it's comfortable! Above all else though go and enjoy your family.

Yep -- USAKilts uses velcro on their casuals, and can put it on the semi-trads instead of buckles. I have two that they made that way, which I wear when traveling. Works great! (As long as I remember to take off the garters -- there's enough metal in the garter buckles to set off the metal detectors! )

The last time I flew, I had to take my boots off three times!
    1. Bag x-ray
    2. Metal detector
    3. Shoe check, looking for explosives or some such nonsense.
After the first flight, I just carried my shoes until I got through the metal detector.

I also got selected for "random" searches at 3 out of the 5 airports I passed through.

The next time I fly, I'm gonna go kilted. If I'm gonna get harrassed anyway, I may as well be comfortable.

Enjoy your trip! Too bad there won't be room for your kilt...
