Method for killing lice at field kitchen
Great War vintage tip from mother's father.
Place bricks in oven until very hot. Remove and cover in brown paper if available. Pass the seams of garments over or between them until the popping noises stop or the bricks cool.
The bricks were also used for keeping food warm.

Never had a huge problem with lice (we had a salve that had DDT that killed them) - had a problem with leeches a few times...... don't like either - Yuck.

It looks like a bandage to me, but I could be wrong. It seems lighter in color than the rest of his skin, and my practical knowledge says that when you get whacked that hard generally it looks darker either from bruising or bleeding. I'm not a medical expert though by any means.
And thanks for all the Primary Source Images! Love them I am such a geek.

I see stripes in the gentleman’s kilt. But I also see what could be stripes on his shirt. To my opinion the kilt is solid colored, and I think that I have read somewhere that some Scottish soldiers used solid colored canvas-type kilts.
Nevertheless it’s a great pic. To me it simply says war over. Peace restored.
I don’t like wars. But I think they might be necessary.

Greg,
You're thinking of the canvas kilt-apron, which was worn over the kilt.

Still looks like swelling to me but it could be shadows, tooth-ache, goiter, I don't know.

I'm not sure what kind of belt he is wearing either. Overall I think his outfit looks pretty sharp though. Enjoy the pic.

YMOS,

I have done some digging re the belt issue and it turns out that some highlanders wore canves money belts, I believe this to be an example
