Portsmouth (VA) Scottish Walk
Unfortunately I won't be able to attend this event, but I saw it in the paper and thought I'd post it up here in case . I'm terrible at keeping up with events on the South Side, so I apologize if this is common knowledge on the other side of the James.
Anyway, on New Year's Eve there's an Olde Town Scottish Walk in Portsmouth. It only lasts from 3:30-5:30, but it's free, so that should bring out the Scot in all of us! There's a Pipe-led Scottish Walk, caroling, mini-concerts and it also mentions whisky tasting in past years!
More info can be found here: http://www.virginia.org/site/descrip...p?attrID=17265
I know the day may not be the best to travel, but I seem to remember seeing a few people from the area so I figured I'd post it. Hope someone gets to enjoy the chance to stroll around the Olde Town area kilted and in (hopefully) beautiful weather!

There was some discussion with the Fredericksburg Scottish Society participating in this. Acutally, I was born in in that area in the now defunct Portsmouth General Hospital. My Dad as a young boy lived near the area but on the other side of the tracks. It would be fun to go. Any takers among the Xmarkers?

Mael, I was just going to suggest that you go, but I see you know the area. You don't need me to tell you that the Olde Town is a rather nice area.

I am from VA Beach grew up there and was stationed at Little Creek and there is no way I would go to P-Town you'll get shot or robbed over there.
I'll be in town for new years but unless some Christmas miracle that has change the area don't think I'll make it.

Portsmouth isn't a perfect area, but from what I've read/seen it's been cleaned up fairly well. Most of the negative news from that side of the James seems to come from Norfolk or Va Beach.

Depends on what block you're in. It's been that way since the colonials.

I hate that I didn't see this until too late - maybe next year.
My family went to the Virginia Children's Museum on the 28th of Dec. and we had a great time (second time for most of us). However, in search of a restaurant that our special diet people could eat at, we stopped at McDonald's (no, I'm not kidding). We had a small problem in the parking lot. I was actually unaware of it at the time (in the second car). It won't keep us away from the area but its good to know that you need to pay attention in that area.
