    I survived the DMV

I went down to the Palm Springs DMV office (kilted) to pick up the new personalized plates for my H3......SPORRAN. You meet all manner of persons when you go there, so I thought it would be a good test of the kilt. As I was taking off the old plates in the parking lot, I got whistled at by a passing pickup truck. Don't know the gender of the whistler, but I just smilled and waved anyway. I go inside, get my number and as I'm walking towards the waiting area a middle aged Hispanic man asked, "Is it a holiday for the kilt?", and I replied with enthusiastim, "Every day is a holiday!". He just smiled and nodded in approval. I sat down next to a young lady who leaned over and said, "I like it........it's cool!". A stocky young man slouching down in his chair a few chairs from her said, "And he ain't wearin' any underwear under it neither.........I don't". To which I replied, "So you wear a kilt too?". He just said, "Yep". I had other smiles and nods of approval, except from the DMV clerk, who was in a foul humor. I smiled and spoke politely, but she was having a crappy day and there was nothing I was going to do to change it. I think that's just the nature of the beast! I went outside to put on my new plates and the same Hispanic man was standing outside having a cigarette. He called out to me and said, "My respect to you my friend!". I thought that was pretty cool.

    Cheers!

Hi RB, I should have been in Palm Springs right now but declined my pal's kind invitation as I have overspent on some work on my house here in the United Kingdom. I believe my trip has been re-scheduled for this time next year now! Jim, my pal, who bought a place there when we were staying in PS in October 2006, is also pretty much a full-time kiltie so you might just have seen him around 'the valley'. He leaves for San Francisco tomorrow (Thursday) but will be back in PS early in January.

By the way, during the two and a half weeks I was in PS last year (full-time kilted, of course!), I do not recall receiving any comments at all - complimentary or otherwise - nor any wolf-whistles!!

    Take care,
    Ham.

Palm Springs! What a great place. We stayed there at the Westin Resort for a week a year and a half ago. It was one of the most fun trips I've ever had. I missed my mountains here in Denver, but it was fun.

I was working the Concierge Desk in the Westin Hotel lobby at that time. Who knows, perhaps we've spoken to each other. I wasn't into kilts at the time, but if you were wearing one, I guarantee I would have complimented you.

    Cheers!

Wow, sounds like a pretty good day, all in all!
And I never blame the DMV people for being grumpy, because I'm generally grumpy by the time I get through the line. Oops

    Hamish,

If your buddy Jim is tuned into the kilt scene here in Palm Springs, I'm sure he's a member of the Scottish Society of the Desert. If so, I'm hoping he's planning to attend the Burns Supper on 1/26 at Indian Wells CC. If he's unaware but interested, send me a private email and I'll provide the info. I'd like to meet him.......it would be nice to know a kindred spirit here in PSP. You should be here now.................you Brits are getting everything for 1/2 price!!! I'm going to pay dearly when I do my QE2 crossing and 5 nights in London next October!!!!

    Cheers!

    Glad all went well.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I'm glad you had such a great experience. Especially since you were expecting trouble.
