I'd agree that it is too Red. However Don't let it stop you making a sporran .

Thanks, the comments are all appreciated. I think I'm going to go ahead and make it. The trick will be to find an appropriate gusset/trim material. A good choice there will tone down the red.

If it doesn't work when I'm done there is always a home for it with the pink bunny fur sporrans

Try using the red just for the flap and a more typical brown or tan for the front and gusset.

After you cut the leather, but before you begin assembly, take a couple of scraps and try over-dying them with various shades of brown (umber) to tone down the leather. If you like the result, then over-dye your cut out pieces before assembly. If you don't like the results than go ahead and put it together the colour it is.

And a bit of neatsfoot oil might just tone it down as well.

If you want the "rub off" look I mentioned, put black shoe polish over the red and then... rub it off!
It would tone the red down quite a bit, and it looks very cool.

You could go with a black flap and black gusset...

Maybe you could try several different things with some scraps and see what you like.

Bob, you could also take a leaf from Turpin's book, and try a tartan swatch. Or maybe a green instead of black/brown for contrast.
